Most of us have heard the term “Mindfulness”, but what exactly does it mean, and why is it important?
Mindfulness is awareness. Awareness of our thoughts, feeling, our body and environment. It has its roots in Buddhism and meditation, but has become more and more popular in recent years.
When practicing mindfulness we don’t live in the past or imagine the future – we simply are present in the moment.
The most important aspect of mindfulness is acceptance. You pay attention to your thoughts and feelings, but you never judge them. There is no right or wrong feelings – there are just feeling, and you can reflect on why they appear. We can all get angry from time to time and that is perfectly fine, but when you realize WHY you get angry, you can analyse the situation and maybe react differently next time a similar situation arises.
Mindfulness might seem a bit fluffy and hard to understant at first glance – I certainly thought it was ridiculous, when I first heard of it. But after really thinking about the concept of mindfulness I realized – I was desperately in need of the practice.
I used to live in the past – worrying and thinking about past situations. I also used to spend a lot of time dreaming about the future – I even had a “Future” board on Pinterest! Without even realizing it, I was holding myself back by not being present.
When we start living in the present and being aware, we appreciate the little things and can find happiness in looking out the window on a rainy day or having a nice cup of coffee.
When we are aware, we can better act accordingly and in this way improve our way of life, our relationships and our environment.
What are your thoughts on mindfulness? If you practice it already in what ways?
